What I Want You to Learn from This LessonToday, we are going to explore UNIQLO’s secondhand clothing strategy and use it to think about a much bigger idea:
How can a company turn something that was once considered “waste” or “cost” into new customer value and new business opportunities?
Traditionally, the fashion industry has grown by designing, producing, and selling more new products. But this model has a major weakness. When companies produce too much inventory, unsold products often lead to markdowns, storage costs, and eventually disposal.
UNIQLO’s approach gives us another way to think about the problem.
Instead of seeing used clothing only as something to recycle or donate, companies can potentially collect garments, clean and inspect them, redesign or remake them, and sell them again as products with a new purpose.
The most important lesson is not simply:
“Secondhand clothing is sustainable.”
The bigger lesson is:
“Value can be redesigned.”
In modern fashion business, companies need the ability not only to create new products, but also to discover new value in products and resources that already exist. This is the central marketing idea we will study today.
