What I Want You to Learn Today
When you hear the term “core product” or “essential product,” what comes to mind?
You might imagine something basic, old-fashioned, or not particularly exciting.
But when we study UNIQLO’s business model, we discover something very different.
Some of UNIQLO’s best-known products—including HEATTECH, Fleece, and Ultra Light Down—are designed to remain relevant year after year.
Customers do not buy them simply because they are fashionable for one season. They buy them because they work, they solve everyday problems, and they have become products people know and trust.
This is one of the most important ideas in today’s lesson:
A strong core product is not a product that never changes.
Instead, UNIQLO continually improves materials, functionality, comfort, fit, colors, sizing, and merchandising while preserving the basic value customers already recognize.
We can describe this strategy as:
Familiarity Customers Trust × Continuous Improvement
When a company develops strong core products, customers become less likely to make their decisions based only on price.
Repeat purchases can increase.
Demand becomes easier to forecast.
Inventory risk can decrease.
Markdown dependence can potentially be reduced.
And gross profit can become more stable.
Therefore, a core product is much more than a bestseller.
It can become the foundation of a brand’s long-term relationship with its customers—and ultimately the foundation of a more stable profit structure.
