What I Want You to Learn Today
Today, we’re going to look at Don Quijote, one of Japan’s most distinctive discount retail chains, and use it to think about the future of physical retail.
Don Quijote—often called “Donki” in Japan—is known for stores packed with food, cosmetics, household goods, electronics, fashion, souvenirs, and unexpected bargains.
There are two major reasons behind its strength.
The first is price competitiveness.
When inflation raises the cost of everyday life, consumers become more price-conscious. A retailer that can offer low prices and surprising bargains has a powerful reason for customers to visit.
But the second reason may be even more important for the future:
Entertainment.
Online shopping is excellent when you already know what you want. You search, compare prices, read reviews, and buy.
Don Quijote offers something very different.
You walk into the store thinking:
“I wonder what I’ll find today.”
Then you discover something you did not expect.
That sense of surprise turns shopping into something closer to a treasure hunt.
This gives us an important lesson about the future of retail:
Physical stores must evolve from places where people simply buy products into places people actually want to visit.
